Pathways to Practice 2008

Pathways to Practice 2008, OCA’s professional development day took place Sept. 27 at the InterContinental Toronto Centre. This year, OCA introduced a one-day professional development member event in lieu of the previous two-day conference format.

Event results have confirmed that Pathways to Practice 2008 was an outstanding success and boasted a record attendance, and the OCA would like to thank all members who joined us in downtown Toronto and helped make the event truly memorable.

The program featured outstanding speakers who delivered presentations in two tracks, one for DCs and one for CHAs. Among the highlights, prominent chiropractor and epidemiologist Dr. Pierre Côté delivered a presentation on his recent research: An Epidemiologic Assessment of the Risk of Stroke from Chiropractic Care. Dr. Anthony Tibbles presented on the subject of WSIB Programs of Care and Dr. Andrew Miners discussed the evaluation and rehabilitation of the shoulder.

“I found the stroke talk and the POC talk to be informative without being boring (yeah!),” wrote one DC in attendance at the event. “The shoulder talk was great.”

“A great program with excellent presenters,” wrote another DC at the event.

Meanwhile, CHAs were treated to a presentation discussing auto insurance procedures by OCA Health Policy Officer Dr. Moez Rajwani and co-presenter Rishma Remtulla; a presentation on patient communications and office management strategies by PMP support representative and seasoned CHA Liz Pridham; an instructional session on creating OCF forms in PMP by PMP Manager Lauren James; and a seminar on practice marketing by practice staffing consultant Susan Cooney.

Another favoured feature of the event was the mini-tradeshow, which this year hosted more than 20 exhibitors and concluded with a special reception for delegates that included a selection of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and provided time for networking with peers. As well, several delegates went home with prizes furnished by various sponsors and exhibitors at the event.

Finally, to round out the program, a free OCA information and education session was held to engage members in discussion about the challenges and opportunities facing the profession, with presentations delivered by OCA President Dr. Thomas Gadsby, and Linda Smith, Executive Vice-President and Senior Partner of the public relations/government relations firm Fleishman-Hillard.

For all their hard work toward making Pathways to Practice 2008 such a success, the OCA would like to offer its thanks to all the members of the 2008 Professional Development Day Planning Committee.
